The Camellia Center coordinates events with a variety of national awareness months related to interpersonal violence.

National Stalking Awareness Month

The U.S. Department of Justice and the Office for Victims of Crime designate January as National Stalking Awareness Month to increase awareness of and education around the crime of stalking. Stalking affects nearly 1 in 3 women and nearly 1 in 6 men in the United States, with nearly half of male stalking victims and more than half of female stalking victims reporting victimization prior to age 25. Stalking awareness and education are crucial parts of campus safety efforts and interpersonal violence prevention.

National Human Trafficking Prevention Month

National Human Trafficking Prevention Month is a presidentially designated observance that has been held every January since 2010. Human trafficking includes both labor and sex trafficking, and more than 27.6 million people around the world have been victimized by trafficking in persons. To bring attention to this form of interpersonal violence, the Camellia Center hosts educational and service events in February.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month: a yearly opportunity to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect. According to the National Children’s Alliance, in 2022, more than 430,000 perpetrators abused or neglected a child. In 76% of substantiated child abuse cases, 76% of children were victimized by a parent or legal guardian. Adult victims of child abuse are eligible for services at the Camellia Center, meaning that any student, faculty, or staff member associated with The University of Alabama can receive free, voluntary, and confidential advocacy and therapy services, no matter when the abuse happened. To bring attention to this issue and the resources available on campus, the Camellia Center hosts events aligning with National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Each April, the Camellia Center recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness by hosting a variety of educational programs. Take Back the Night events are held across the country to unify communities to take a stand against gender based violence. Our Wounded Hearts art exhibit offers visual testimony to the impact of violence in our lives. Survivors and those who work with them are invited to use wooden hearts as vehicles of expression and healing. This inspiring exhibit invites everyone to bear witness and honor the healing power of the human heart. In April 2023, the Camellia Center developed a new signature event, Survivors Bloom from Within, that offers mindfulness activities and information about a variety of campus and community resources that can be helpful to survivors of interpersonal violence.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Each October, the Camellia Center recognizes Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness by hosting a variety of educational programs. Past events have included a candle-light vigil honoring victims and survivors, student-led panels on media portrayals of domestic violence, and relevant film screenings.
